Poutine: A Canadian Snacking Tradition
Poutine: Thick-cut french fries deep-fried to a crispy golden brown color and a handful of fresh cheese curds that has been smothered in rich brown gravy is a snack that is often looked down upon by most people, until they try it of course.
Even my husband scoffed when I mentioned this French Canadian side dish which comes loaded with flavor (and calories). He ate his words after his first bite and gained five pounds from having poutine every day on our first trip home to Canada together.
In my hometown of Carleton Place, poutine can be found on any restaurant menu, and if the urge for poutine should hit while you’re driving, you’ll also find plenty of chip trucks and chip shops in the vicinity to meet your snack attack.
Poutine is one of the things I look forward to eating when I come home, and this year, I had the added pleasure of introducing two British friends to the wonderful world of poutine.
My favorite chip shop is Woody’s on Highway 7 on the way to Perth. People come from miles around for the poutine, and when I told the owner that they’re most recent guests had recently come from England and Taiwan, they were suitably impressed.
My wanderfood adventures have taken me to the other side of the world in the Great White North this summer. If you’re interested in reading more global foodie tales, stop by Wanderfood Wednesday over at Wanderlust and Lipstick.

New Energy Bill Isn’t the Real Thing, Says President Obama
As Senate Democrats revealed their previously-announced completely pared-down energy bill yesterday, President Obama tried to calm the public by saying this was just the first step in a long process. The new bill does outline a number of provisions relating to the offshore drilling industry, including lifting the liability cap for oil spills, denying drilling rights to any company that has 10 or more deaths in the last 7 years on offshore or land based wells (right now BP is the only one), and it supports the President’s plan to create a new governmental agency to oversee the now-stiffer regulations for the drilling industry. As we mentioned earlier this week, it also provides incentives for natural gas vehicles, and to our pleasant surprise better incentives for electric vehicles as well.

Snøhetta Selected to Design A New Car-Free Times Square
Exciting news for the Times Square Redevelopment Project has come to light! Norwegian firm, Snøhetta has been awarded the project to redesign a car-free, pedestrian friendly Times Square as well as public spaces on Broadway between 42nd – 47th Streets. We’ve loved the project since its inception and couldn’t be more excited to see what Snøhetta ultimately comes up with for the foot-traffic heavy section of New York. Installation of the “Cool Water, Hot Island” temporary project by Molly Dilworth, which we’ve written about before, is said to happen in July and the permanent makeover will commence in 2012.

The Blink: A New Intuitive Electric Vehicle Charging Station
The Blink family of electric vehicle charging stations was just unveiled at the Plug-in 2010 conference in San Jose, California and we’re already envisioning them sprouting up on street corners and garages around the country. The intuitive and simple design was created to help early electric vehicle adopters jump right into the charging game. The designers are hoping to outfit your home and community with a dense network of stations so your daily driving routine is fully electrified.
