The vastness of blue Canadian skies still astounds me after all these years. I still can’t get over the shock of seeing a skyline that doesn’t have mountains in it.

Every time I come home, I develop a whole new appreciation for Canada. The old adage that you don’t really know what you’ve got until it’s gone is especially true in this case. I am always blown away by the sheer natural beauty of Canada, no matter the season. I miss Canada more with each year that goes by.

My days have been filled with long walks and bike rides in the fresh air, and every night I’ve climbed into bed and fallen asleep before my head even hits the pillow. It’s good to be home…

I’ve just spent the last week at our family cottage in North Bay with some of my most favorite people in the world: my mom and dad, my brother, my sister and her boyfriend; one of my dearest friends, Andrew Morgan, and two very special guests from the Jersey Channel Islands, (my traveling buddy and best girl friend) Claire Breen and her roommate, Hayley.

This was our first full family get-together in a long time. I can’t remember the last time we were all up at the cottage together. It must have been before 2002, since that was the last time I was home for the summer.

Claire and Hayley fell in love with the Great White North’s style of summer vacationing by the lake. We lazed around, plowed through books, went for walks, sunbathed and ate an enormous amount of junk food (dill pickle chips mmm…) the entire week. It was bliss.

On Saturday, we threw a big party for my mom, who turned 61 this summer. You’d never know it to look at her! We cooked steaks on the barbecue, drank loads of good Canadian beer, dragged the karaoke machine out on the front porch, and serenaded the lake well into the evening. It was a perfect week.

This morning, we’re on our way to Toronto to visit some friends and do some sightseeing. I’m just as excited as the girls.  I haven’t been to Toronto for well over ten years and I”ll be seeing everything with fresh eyes.

I hope you’re all enjoying your summer, dear readers. I apologize for the lack of posting this summer, but life gets in the way every once in a while, and I’m busy enjoying every second of it.

Terra-Gen Power just secured a whopping 1.2 billion dollars in financing to up the ante on United States wind farms. With this latest round of cash they’ll be adding 570 megawatts of capacity to their Alta Wind Energy Center in Kern County, California to bring the total capacity up to a mega-impressive 3,000 megawatts making it the largest wind farm in the United States. The farm should be completed and ready for juicing the grid with renewable energy by the first and second quarters of 2011. Anyone up for topping that? This, “who can build the biggest wind farm,” is one showmanship game that we’re totally willing to egg on.

We’ve explored the joys of recycled robots before, but never any quite as elephantine as, well… this giant elephant. Built in France as part of the Machines of the Isle of Nantes, an art and culture show full of dream and fantasy, the 12 meter high x 8 meter wide mechanical elephant was cobbled together using 45 tons of reclaimed wood and steel. Talk about a memorable green ride… get it? Because elephants have good memories… nevermind, just read on for more details about this amazing robotic beast.

The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) stated today that foreign direct investment (FDI) for first quarter of 2010 has nearly matched the full year of 2009. "But this is not enough. As the Prime Minister has stated, we still have to continue with reforms to make Malaysia more attractive to investors and to help us achieve the goals set out in the 10th Malaysia Plan and under Vision 2020," said its minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed. In a statement, Mustapa said the government had already taken initiatives to cope the issue, and to date, Malaysia has already seen an increase in FDI over the first quarter this year. FDI inflows totalled RM5.06 billion for the January to March 2010 period, compared with RM5.66 billion for all of 2009, he said. Last week, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in its World Investment Report 2010 said that Malaysia's FDI fell by 81 per cent last year, trailing behind countries like the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore. While acknowledging the dampening FDI inflows into Malaysia, Mustapa said it should be highlighted that Malaysia was also named in the same report as one of the top 15 host countries for FDI for 2010-2012 by a survey of transnational corporations. He said the government had introduced several key initiatives, such as economic liberalisation, the Government Transformation Programme, New Economic Model and 10th Malaysia Plan to spur the economy. Having seen the early signs of the decline, the government instituted wide-ranging reforms as early as April 2009, Mustapa said. "These efforts will achieve results over time. Malaysia has already seen an increase in FDI over the first quarter of 2010," he said. -- BERNAMA

Linear Corporation Bhd says it will be taking steps to appoint Special Auditors to undertake full investigation into the accounts of Prime Savings Trust (PST) and the King Dome project. This follows a directive from Bursa Malaysia. The outcome of the findings will be released to Bursa Malaysia once the investigation is completed, Linear said in a filing to the stock exchange today.
