Tesla Working on Electric RAV4, Lexus RX Prototypes for Toyota

toyota, tesla, lexus rx, rav4, ev, phev

Remember how Toyota announced last month that it plans to build an electric vehicle with Tesla? It looks like things are moving relatively quickly–at least compared to Tesla’s normally turtle-like  turnaround time.  Tesla is reportedly working on electrified versions of the Toyota RAV4 and Lexus RX trucks to be delivered to Toyota later this month.

Science City Stores Warm Air from Summer to Heat Buildings in Winter

Gehrard Schmitt, Honggerberg Campus, Science City, heat exchanger, anergy, heating systems, cooling systems

Humans are pretty temperature-sensitive creatures, which means we use a ton of power every year through heating and air-conditioning systems. But imagine if there were a way to save the summer’s hot air and use it to heat buildings throughout the winter. Sounds like science fiction, right? Well one Swiss University has a plan to make that dream a reality with their campus, Science City.

TNB expects lower profit in Q4

MALAYSIA'S biggest power producer, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), expects lower profit in the fourth quarter of its financial year ending August 2010 compared to the third quarter due to rising coal prices. Its president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohd Noh said the fourth quarter earnings were also expected to be lower than the corresponding quarter in 2009. "The fourth quarter definitely will reduce our profitability compared to the third quarter because by now we have already locked in the coal price for the fourth quarter. We buy forward every three months. So, we already know what's the price for the fourth quarter and based on that surely, it will have an impact on our bottomline," he said. "However, it is not going to be a major drop," he told reporters after at the company's third-quarter financial results announcement today. The national power producer recorded a higher pre-tax profit of RM2,854.1 million in the third quarter of financial year 2010 compared to RM2,216.5 million in the same period last year due to higher forex translation. At the third quarter, the coal cost was at US$91.6 per tonne while it was US$82 per tonne in the second quarter and US$80 per tonne in the third quarter. Che Khalib said the uptrend in coal prices was worrying as the increases were uncertain. "The price we have been getting of late has been going up. That worries us, whether the trend of coal prices climbing up will continue or not," he said. "We hope the price remains the same and if it continues, it will definitely hurt the bottomline." Che Khalib said as the coal price fixed by the government was US$85 per tonne, and TNB was absorbing the extra cost in the current price. He said the average coal price for the full financial year was estimated to be around US$90 per tonne. On the gas price, Che Khalid said so far, TNB had not received any indication from the government that the price would be reviewed soon, and therefore the price remained the same since last year. At present, the power sector's fuel mix comprises 65 per cent gas, 28 per cent coal, almost seven per cent hydro and less than 0.1 per cent diesel. Responding to reports on the expected double-dip recession, Che Khalib said "we have to see how the world economy reacts to the news of this". "We are monitoring closely on a weekly basis the demand for electricity, going forward," he said. "Of course, there are already some signs of demand for electricity remaining flat over the last one month. So far, there is no drastic drop as we saw in 2008 and 2009." To date, TNB's reserve margin stands at 42 per cent and Che Khalib expects it will come down to 40 per cent by the beginning of its next financial year. "At 42 per cent, it is healthy. By 2015, our reserve margin will come down to about 20 per cent and that's why we need to have new injection by early 2015. This helps in a way to average down our capacity charges," he said. -- BERNAMA
