Malaysian banks’ valuation ‘compelling’

CIMB Group Holdings Bhd rose to a record, leading Malaysian banks higher in Kuala Lumpur trading after BNP Paribas said valuations of the nation's lenders remain "compelling" even after their recent rally. CIMB, Malaysia's second-largest bank, added 1 per cent to RM14.28 at the close, while the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI Index increased 0.8 per cent. Malayan Banking Bhd added 0.9 per cent to RM7.48 and RHB Capital Bhd climbed 0.5 per cent to RM5.69. Malaysia's lenders have surged since the central bank on March 4 raised its benchmark rate for the first time since April 2006, saying record-low borrowing costs were no longer warranted as the economy emerges from recession and inflation accelerates. Banks are trading at "below historical averages," Ng Wee Siang, an analyst at BNP, said in a report today. "With trends turning more positive, we expect the re-rating to extend further." CIMB is BNP's top pick among lenders. Bank Negara Malaysia increased its overnight policy rate to 2.25 per cent from 2 per cent, allowing banks with variable rate loans to increase their own lending rates and boost margins. The Kuala Lumpur Finance Index has risen 4.6 per cent since March 4. Ng recommended investors "watch the improving tide" as there are "positives aplenty" including rising net interest margins, stronger loan "traction" and improving asset quality. -- Bloomberg

New Economic Model to look at high income, productivity

The country's New Economic Model will look at high income as well as productivity while providing the flexibility to address a global crisis. Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister, Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir said the country's business strategy could no longer be based on low-cost labour as it was no longer an advantage. "We are trying to push for a new economic strategy based on innovation and creativity," Mukhriz told reporters during his visit to Perodua's plant and headquarters here today. He emphasized that the high income will commensurate with productivity. He also said the private sector had a key role to play, and that it was disheartening to see that in the past few years, research and development expenditure among the private sector had dropped. The government will continue to provide incentives, he added. -- Bernama
