Independent UK Panel Says that Parts of “Climategate” are an Illusion

The story of the e-mail leaks from the University of East Anglia in the UK has now come to one — of what we’re sure there will be many — conclusions. Back in November the story broke out that Professor Phil Jones and his colleagues at UEA had written e-mails back and forth that some people say were meant to obscure pieces of their climate change research in order to silence their critics. An investigation ensued into whether they were violating the Freedom of Information Legislation of the UK, whether their science was faulty and who on earth stole those e-mails. The first of the three questions has been answered and Professor Jones and UAE have been cleared of wrongdoing.

Funds, analysts less sceptical of economy

Fund managers and analysts are now less sceptical about the Malaysian economy now after obtaining a comprehensive view of the country's intiatives at the Invest Malaysia 2010 conference. Malayan Banking Bhd's president/chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar said the unveiling of the New Economy Model (NEM) has given the participants a clearer view of the moves to transform the economy. "This gave them more confident and showed that the Malaysian government is really going to push to achieve its plans," he told a media briefing today. Meanwhile, Bursa Malaysia CEO, Datuk Yusli Mohamed Yusoff, said he hoped that with the next phase of the implementation and execution of the NEM, investors would be no more sceptical. Yusli said the market capitalisation of the companies that participated in the conference amounted to half a trillion ringgit, which was almost half of total market capitalisation in Malaysia. "The assets managed by the fund managers who attended the conference were RM4.2 trillion," he said. About 800 delegates attended the conference. -- Bernama

Firefly sees 20pc profit from aircraft ads

Firefly, which launched an aircraft marketing campaign partnership with SP Setia Bhd today, expects to see a 20 per cent contribution from aircraft advertising to net profit this year. The community airline's managing director Datuk Eddy Leong said last year, there was no contribution from this segment. The one-year partnership with SP Setia entails all seven of Firefly's ATR-500s, carrying the property developers branding, internally and externally to promote its properties. Leong also said Firefly is looking to receive three new aircraft this year, which would enhance its current services. "The new aircraft will help expand our services and we hope to have hourly departures to Penang. "We also want to have a departure every two hours to Kota Baharu, at least two or three flights to Johor and fly more to Singapore," he said at the launch of the marketing campaign in Petaling Jaya today. Firefly, which currently flies to 17 destinations from Subang and Penang, offers 72 flights daily, carrying 4000 passengers. Meanwhile, the tie-up with Firefly presents opportunities for SP Setia to introduce the best of Malaysian's properties to locals and foreigners. SP Setia group president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin said the partnership, would contribute positively towards stimulating the property industry.-- Bernama

Bursa expects ‘flatish’ revenue, profit

Bursa Malaysia Bhd expects revenue and profit for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2010 to be "flattish" amid higher cost. Its chief executive officer, Datuk Yusli Mohamed Yusoff, said revenue and subsequently profit could be offset by increase in cost in terms of marketing and promotions to be done this year. This could lead to a flattish performance, he said when asked on the financial outlook for the company this year. Yusli was met at the sideline of Invest Malaysia 2010 today. For the year ended Dec 31, 2009, Bursa registered a pre-tax profit of RM219.181 million, up from RM145.6 million the previous year, while revenue jumped to RM402.4 million from RM331.67 million. Last year, the stock exchange operator put on hold some of its marketing and promotion activities amid a sluggish market condition and the strict cost management measures it had put in place. However, if the stock market performs exceptionally good then the revenue and profit could be better, Yusli said. Bursa Malaysia's capital expenditure last year was RM22 million, and this year it could be slightly higher as there are several projects it is working on, he said. Among others, Bursa's derivatives products would be transferred for listing on CME Globex. The transfer is expected to take place by the second half of this year.--Bernama
