ECO ART: Vintage Needlework Upcycled as Trophy Art

Art, deer, eco-art, embroidery, Frederique Morrel, needlework, passe-murailles, reuse, upcycle, visitors, decorative objects, home decor

Saddened by the sight of abandoned needlework, a family of designers at Frederique Morrel have made upcycling tapestry their main passion. From old piles of handmade drapes, to forgotten pillows, to intricately woven knick-knaks leftover from the neigbor’s rummage sale, these designers are rescuing embroidery from oblivion by transforming passed over pieces into new beautifully crafted foot-stools, couches, and stunning woodland creatures.

Zurich Fin plans units in Indonesia, Malaysia

Zurich Financial Services AG, Switzerland's largest insurer, plans to start units in Indonesia and Malaysia as it aims to double the contribution Asia makes to its life insurance business next year. "I want Asia to become 20 per cent of our life results," from "slightly less" than 10 per cent Mario Greco, chief executive officer of the global life division, said in an interview from Zurich. "I hope we can achieve this next year." Asia accounted for less than 10 per cent of the US$3.67 billion of annual premiums and annualized single premiums sold by Zurich in 2009. The so-called annual premium equivalent is a standard measure of new life insurance business premiums. Zurich Financial's life business operating profit from emerging markets tripled last year to US$64 million out of a total of $1.48 billion. The Zurich-based insurer, which sells life USproducts in Hong Kong and Singapore, and in China through its investment in New China Life, plans to start operations in Indonesia and is "actively looking into Malaysia," said Greco. "Last year I went to Asia seven times," said Greco. "It was the most important destination for me." Following a recent law change, the company wants to gain control of the Malaysian general insurance joint venture, MCIS Zurich Insurance Bhd, in which it holds a 40 per cent stake, said Geoff Riddell, chairman of the global corporate division and CEO for Asia-Pacific and Middle East. "Malaysia and Indonesia are economically the two most attractive emerging market countries for us," said Riddell. The Asian market contributes about 5 per cent of the sales of Europe's fourth-biggest insurer by market capitalization, with Hong Kong accounting for half of that. -- Bloomberg
